Firefighters are saying Ted’s Swinging Door Bar & Grill in Wyoming, Iowa is a total loss after it caught fire.

According to former fire chief, current firefighter, Allen Willman, the Wyoming Volunteer Fire Company got a the call shortly after noon on Sunday, July 21, 2013.

Willman said upon arrival, the entire restaurant was consumed with smoke. The haze prevented firefighters from entering until they put on air packs. Eight departments helped control the fire, which was about a four-hour process. The building has steel siding, which made the fire tougher to extinguish.

“It’s a lot of memories,” said lifetime resident of Wyoming, Albert Storm. “[There were] a lot of good times in the old tavern. Everybody’s going to miss the place.”

Next-door to Ted’s Swinging Door Bar & Grill is the Wyoming Historical Museum, which Willman said appears to be alright.

“A lot of people in this community worked very hard to build that up and we wanted to make sure that we could, if at all possible, we could save it for them,” said Willman. “It looks like they saved most of their stuff.”

No major injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

Willman, who has been a Wyoming resident for 64-years, said Ted’s Swinging Door Bar & Grill was a staple to the community.

“You hate to lose anything in a small town, especially a place where people meet; and it was a place where people can go after work and they served great food there,” he said. “So it’s a loss to our community.”
