Modern Woodmen Park competes to be named best
Modern Woodmen Park is one of 20 finalist locations competing to be named the best minor league ballpark in America.
USA Today baseball writers considered amenities, architecture, the view and how the parks pay homage to legendary players when nominating the parks. Twenty minor league parks in 15 states are on the list. Modern Woodmen Park is the only facility in Iowa or Illinois to be nominated.
The online poll says Modern Woodmen Park was nominated for its architecture, views and the cornfield from which players emerge, a la ‘Field of Dreams.’
“Plenty of ballparks have outfield berms, but few also serve as the retaining wall necessary to avert flooding, an issue which has plagued this site for decades. At the top of the berm is a popular tiki bar with equal views of river and ballgame. And there’s a cornfield in the stadium – it is Iowa, after all,” the poll site said.
Selecting the best minor league park in the country is up to public vote. You can vote once per day every day until noon on August 12, 2013. Winners will be announced August 14.
