Police said a cement truck driver was trying to avoid having a crash when his truck rolled on Highway 61 in Scott County, Iowa.

The crash was reported just before 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013.

Southbound lanes of the highway were closed to allow a helicopter ambulance to land.

Police said the cement truck was carrying a full load northbound on U.S. 61 when traffic suddenly slowed when another vehicle made a sudden lane change.  The driver, 56-year-old Kevin Peeters of Bettendorf, swerved to avoid a crash and lost control of the cement truck.

That’s when the cement truck hit a guardrail and overturned into the median.

Peeters was trapped for nearly a half-hour before rescue crews could free him from the wreckage.

Initial reports indicated Peeters was airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City.  Police later said he was taken to a Davenport hospital.

Petters suffered multiple injuries.  Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

No charges were filed in connection with the crash.
