Police say residents should be on the lookout for scam artists offering driveway seal coating and asphalt repair.
Des Moines County, Iowa Sheriff Mike Johnstone said his office has fielded several complaints from rural residents who were offered cut-rate deals to seal coat their driveways, only to be charged triple the quoted price when the job was complete.
“(These) unlicensed groups prefer to pray on older residents and use intimidation to collect exorbitant fees,” Johnstone said.
Some potential victims reported the workers appeared to be from Missouri.
Johnstone said anyone who is approached by someone offering any home improvement services should first call the Sheriff’s Department at (319) 753-8366 or local law enforcement to verify the solicitor is in compliance with state laws.
