A Des Moines woman who killed her boyfriend’s dog was sentenced to probation and won’t serve any prison time.

Sheena Ann Cornwell, 28, was charged with animal torture in connection with the hanging death of Lillie, a ten-year-old dog adopted from a rescue shelter.

At a hearing Friday, July 5, 2013, Judge Joe Smith sentenced Cornwell to probation.

In court, Cornwell reportedly told Judge Joe Smith “I really confused a lot of people.  I love animals.  I want to figure out why I did what I did.”  Cornwell has reportedly not been diagnosed with any mental illness.

WHO-TV reports the judge said adding prison to her sentence wouldn’t do any good, and that he did not thing Cornwell was a danger to anyone.

“I’m very worried she`ll do this again,” says Tom Colvin of the Animal Rights League. “We don`t know if this has actually happened before. This is the one she got caught for.”

Cornwell pleaded guilty to one count of animal torture.  In addition to probation, Cornwell must continue psychiatric treatment and cannot have any pets for the next two years.
