It's a sign of the times at Magnolia Crest Farms in Davenport. There's plenty of home grown vegetables, herbs and flowers for sale, but no sweet corn just yet.
"Right now, there's just the beginning of a little, tiny kernel starting to form," said longtime grower Norm Lau.
Lau knows more than a thing or two about sweet corn. Seven generations of his family have farmed this Scott County land since 1853.
"It looks surprisingly good for the amount of rainfall that we've had," he said.
Growers like to have sweet corn for sale by July 4th, but that just wasn't possible this year.
"It was a challenge," he said. "Last year, we were three weeks ahead at this time. This year, we're three weeks behind."
Extreme weather is taking a toll on the tasty crop. It's a soggy situation that forced late planting and an even later harvest.
Lau's sweet corn should be ready between July 20-25. There will be plenty to last until first frost.
Extreme weather has been rough on other home grown crops as well. That makes a sunny Friday even more valuable.
"It will be here sooner than you think," Lau concluded. "The quality will be fantastic. It's going to be a good year."
At Magnolia Crest Farms, sweet corn that will be worth the wait.
