Open plan office blamed for unfocused workers

If you have trouble focusing at work, your office set-up could be to blame.

If you have trouble focusing at work, your office set-up could be to blame.

A new survey shows people in open-layout workplaces are more distracted and less able to focus on the job.

Nearly three-quarters of all workers function every day in open-plan offices.  Some employers like them because of their cost efficiency, and some say they are more collaborative work spaces.

Global design and architecture firm Gensler found that open workplaces hinder worker focus and performance.

Digital business news outlet Quartz reports open plan offices also make employees less happy and more likely to get sick.

Despite those reports, the trend toward open offices is still on the rise.  Facebook just announced plans to build the biggest open-plan office in the world at its Silicon Valley campus.
