A branch of Ascentra Credit Union was reportedly robbed Tuesday morning, July 2, 2013.

The robbery was reported just after 9:30 a.m. at the branch at 1515 West 53rd Street.

Initial reports indicated a man handed a note to a teller which said he was armed, but he did not display a weapon when he robbed the credit union.  He was last seen leaving the credit union westbound, and employees said they locked the doors and called police immediately following the robbery.

The building and drive-thru lanes remained closed nearly an hour after the robbery was reported.  A spokesperson for the credit union said the branch would reopen at noon.

The suspect was described as 5-feet 6-inches to 5-feet 8-inches tall, possibly about 40 years old, with a scruffy beard.  The suspect was reportedly wearing a baseball hat with red on it, a white t-shirt, a tan jacket, blue jeans and glasses.  It was unclear whether the glasses were clear or sunglasses.

No injuries were reported.

“We are very proud of how our staff handled this difficult situation today and thankful that our staff and membership that were in the building the time of the incident are ok,” said Dale Owen, Interim President & CEO, EVP of Ascentra Credit Union.
