Moline’s Riverside Park is one of three finalists competing to win a new early childhood playground.

The park, at 3300 Fifth Avenue, is competing with an elementary school in Dorchester, Massachusetts and another park in Mason City, Iowa to receive the prize from Playworld Systems as part of their “Write to Play” contest.

Moline Alderman Lori Turner entered the park in the contest.  The entry included submitting a written essay on the importance of bringing play to your community.

“Playgrounds are essential for making play safe and fun, stretching the imagination of a child as well as strengthening the security of neighborhoods and the community.  Riverside Park is in need of equipment, as unsafe old equipment was removed a couple years ago, leaving just a couple of swing sets and a climber,” Turner’s entry said.

Her essay also said the playground would enhance the park for the local YMCA and other groups that use the park.

“Many would come and enjoy this playground truly bring out the sunshine even on a cloudy day,” Turner’s essay said.

Voting began July 1, and will be open until July 16.  You must be on Facebook to vote, where you can share the link with your Facebook friends and you can vote daily online – click here.
