Iowa veterans now have the option to add a “veteran” designation to their driver’s licenses.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the designation is a voluntary initiative designed to assist veterans who benefit from discounts offered by businesses. Iowa DOT said often veterans have to provide proof of status to take advantage of offers.
The designation will become available starting July 1, 2013.
Veterans can have the designation put on their driver’s license or on their nonoperator identification card. The designation can be placed any time they get a new card- not just when it’s time to renew.
An honorably discharged veteran must show a copy of their DD 214 to their county Veterans Affairs office to get the designation. The office then confirms the status and completes an Iowa DOT form for authorization. The completed form may then be taken to any Iowa driver’s license issuance location for the designation to be added.
To speed up the process, veterans may print out and complete an application form to be given to the Veterans Affairs office.
