A Des Moines business executive says he is considering a run for Tom Harkin’s Senate seat.

Harkin previously announced his plan to retire from the Senate at the end of his current term.

TheIowaRepublican.com reports Mark Jacobs, a Republican, plans to meet with Iowans across the state before deciding whether to officially enter the race.

The site reports Jacobs grew up in Des Moines and became one of the youngest Fortune 500 company CEOs in the U.S. when he led Reliant Energy in 2007.

“Jacobs says he is frustrated with the inability of Congress to get things done for the benefit of the citizens and believes someone with his background could make a difference in Washington, D.C.,” the site says.

The site further states Jacobs has the resources to self-fund a campaign if needed.

Jacobs, a lifelong Republican, now lives with his wife and three children in West Des Moines.

Three other Republicans – Sam Clovis, Matt Whitaker and David Young – have announced they will run, and at least three more are reported to be seriously considering a bid.

Congressman Bruce Braley is the only Democrat who has formally announced his candidacy, and he is the presumptive Democratic nominee.
