Rock Island City Hall was packed with people concerned about the fate of the former Audobon School building.

City officials are considering moving ahead with a plan to replace the vacant school with a Fareway grocery store.

The Rock Island Planning commission denied Fareway’s rezoning request, but the city council can overturn that decision.

Some neighborhood residents say the project would bring new business and jobs to the city of Rock Island.

Others say the location just isn’t right.   Some have even vowed to file a lawsuit to stop any plan to build a grocery store on the site.

An alternative proposal would renovate the building for possible residential use.

No date was set yet for a vote to decide the fate of the building.
