Powerful storms knocked out electricity to tens of thousands of MidAmerican Energy customers in and around the Quad Cities.
Storms pushed through the area Monday afternoon, June 24, 2013. The afternoon storms were more potent than morning storms that day, which had already left several hundred area customers without electricity.
At the height of the afternoon storms, MidAmerican Energy reported nearly 29,000 customers had lost electricity in our area.
By 5 p.m., that number was closer to 25,000 without power. More than 20,000 of those outages were reported on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities. Rock Island, Moline and East Moline were hardest hit, but outages were reported in Andalusia, Andover, Carbon Cliff, Cleveland, Coal Valley, Colona, Hampton, Hillsdale, Milan, Orion, Rapids City, Reynolds, Sherrard and Silvis.
Outages were also reported in rural areas in Henry, Page, Mercer, and Rock Island counties.
The heaviest concentration of outages on the Iowa side was in Davenport. Outages were also reported in Bettendorf, Blue Grass, Buffalo, Camanche, Eldridge, LeClaire, Princeton and Riverdale.
The outage numbers increased slightly just before 6 p.m. when nearly 7,000 Iowa-side customers reported power out and more than 24,600 outages were reported on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities. There were still more than 5,100 outages reported on the Iowa side of the Quad Cities at 7:15 p.m. and more than 24,000 without power on the Illinois side.
