Fire crews find Birdsell Chiropractic engulfed in flames

Fire engulfed apartments in the upper level of a downtown Moline building.

Updated: 1:43 p.m. Sunday, June 16.

The fire began around 10 a.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief, Ike Sederstrom.

Sederstrom said when crews arrived the Birdsell Chiropractic, a two-story building with apartments upstairs, the back porch was engulfed in flames. He said it was a very tough fire to extinguish because the building is old and construction in front of the building added an extra challenge.

Owner of the building, David Birdsell said he was alerted to the fire by a tenant.

Birdsell said the building he has owned for over 30-years is the oldest commercial building in Moline.

"I've put a lot of time and work in it over the years," said Birdsell. "It's real sad to see this."

No major injuries were reported after the fire.

Rock Island, Moline, East Moline, and Bettendorf Fire Departments were on the scene, along with the Rock Island Arsenal, according to Sederstrom.

Fire engulfed apartments in the upper level of a downtown Moline building.

On Sunday, June 16, 2013 firefighters were sent to the 1200-block of 5th Ave. for a fire at a chiropractic office. Three apartments in the upper part of the building were engulfed in flames.

According to the building’s owner, the residents got out. The resident’s pets reportedly did not make it out.

Firemen said that the high ceilings made the fire harder to fight. The fire had burnt out several layers of the roof.

Cool down stations were on site for the firemen.
