Police say they’re fielding complaints that people claiming to sell magazines for overseas troops are actually just trying to get into your home, where they steal money and prescription medications.
Most of the victims say a nicely-dressed, college-aged woman came to their door, selling subscriptions to magazines and books to be sent to troops serving overseas.
What happens next is what troubles police.
The woman will ask the homeowner if she can have a bandage for her finger. Once she gets inside the home, she will also ask to use the restroom.
Moline Police said victims have had prescription medications stolen from medicine bottles, and they’ve had money taken from purses.
In some cases, the woman manages to sell some magazines. A young, white man may also be going door-to-door claiming to sell magazines for the same company, called HP Consulting, Inc.
Police say they think the company “may be a nonexistent organization and they are not registered with the city,” according to Moline Police Department Public Information Officer, Detective Scott Williams.
Police are actively searching for the two suspects in this case.
The woman is described as Caucasian with brown eyes and dark, shoulder-length hair. She is 5’5” tall and weighs about 135 pounds. She appears to be college-aged and wears a nice shirt and slacks.
“Do not hesitate to contact the police department if you have any questions as to whether or not you are dealing with a legitimate salesman,” Det. Williams said.
