Police say a Sperry, Iowa man was driving while intoxicated when he drove off road and traveled about 200 feet before he ran into an electrical transformer.

Steven Scott Lake, 20, was reportedly northbound on Highway 61 in Mediapolis at about 5:30 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 when the vehicle he was driving crossed over the center line and went into the ditch along the southbound lane of travel.

Police said the vehicle “traveled through the ditch for 75 feet, across the business driveway of Clara’s Gardens for 40 feet, and then another 85 feet through the ditch until it struck an Alliant Energy electrical transformer.”

Lake reportedly left the scene of the crash, and police arrived to find the vehicle stuck in the ditch.

Lake was charged with operating while intoxicated, and online court records show he was appointed a public defender to represent him in the case.

Police also accused Lake of having no insurance and failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

Online records show Lake was released from the Des Moines County Jail the same day he was arrested.
