A sump pump at the main wastewater pumping station in Princeton, Iowa failed, sending raw sewage flowing into the Mississippi River.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported the discharge started at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 and was still going at 3:30 p.m.

City officials estimated the failed pump allowed about 75 gallons of untreated wastewater into the river every minute.

City officials also hoped to dry out the pump and reinstall it Monday.
