Thousands of runners and walkers raised thousands of dollars at the 24th annual Race for the Cure in Moline.
According to a spokesperson from Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure, $250,000 was raised from the event, and nearly 8,200 people were registered- including 540 breast cancer survivors.
Organizers are attributing the event’s success to not only the runners and walkers who participated on Saturday, June 8, but also sponsors, fundraisers, and others who participated through “Sleep in for the Cure,” allowing people to make a monetary donation and receiving a race t-shirt.
After the running events, racers enjoyed a “pink glove dance,” activities for kids, photo booths, and refreshments.
Over $14,000 was raised through a website created by individual and team fundraisers.
Up to 75-percent of the funds raised will stay and be used in local areas in Iowa and Illinois to provide mammograms and other breast health services for under-served and under-insured women. All the rest of the funds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for research efforts working to find a cure for breast cancer.
