Area students interested in math and science got the chance to attend a mini-academy introducing them to the medical field.
High school juniors, seniors, and 2013 graduates were eligible for Trinity’s Mini-Medical Academy on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9 as part of the Cardiovascular Medicine - Illinois Math and Science Initiative.
The medical camp took place at Trinity College of Nursing & Health Sciences in Rock Island. Students got to speak with professionals in the field and attend their lectures, participate in simulation labs (such as IV insertion and defibrillation stations), and along with other activities, they got to dissect a pig heart.
Allison Hanser, a high school graduate with plans to attend Creighton University in the fall said she has an interest in biology. She attended the academy to see if this field would be right for her.
“I came to this camp to figure out more about what it really means to be a doctor and what it would really entail,” said Hanser. “I’m just overwhelmed by how knowledgeable the people that we get to talk with are, and that’s really exciting for me.”
2013 was the third year for the Mini-Medical Academy.
