Each year 113 children in the U.S. die from farm-related accidents, according to the Center for Disease Control. To help teach kids how to avoid dangers, a safety day event was held in DeWitt.

Eastern Iowa Progressive Agriculture held Safety Day at the Clinton County Fairgrounds on Friday, June 7, 2013.

Kids ages 8-14 participated in discussions and saw demonstrations about fire, chemical, tractor, grain, ATV, fire-arm, and livestock and animal safety. Other topics covered at Safety Day were cyber safety, drug and alcohol awareness, and lawn and garden equipment.

Safety manager at John Deere, Dale Wriedt said the kids responded well to the lessons on Friday and he hopes they will pass along their new-found knowledge to others.

"It's not only so much what they learn but then what they can take back to their parents and share with their parents," said Wriedt.

Each kid got a t-shirt and a take-home “goody” bag.
