Iowa residents can enjoy a weekend of fishing for free.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday- June 7, 8, and 9, Iowans can try fishing without buying a license.

Chief of the Iowa DNR’s Fisheries Bureau, Joe Larscheid, said some of the best fishing is at the following waters- Twelve Mile Lake, Green Valley Lake, Clear Lake, and Meadow Lake.

He said Prairie Rose Lake, Badger Creek Lake, Lake Pahoja, and Lizard Lake are being improved to provide better fishing in the future.

“We hope that someone who gives fishing a try during free fishing weekend will enjoy the experience and want to go fishing more often and become a license holder,” Larscheid said.

The DNR is offering a first fish award for anyone who is catching their very first fish. As part of their First Fish Program, new fishers can submit a photo and will receive a certificate with the submitted photo in return.

Also, qualifying fish caught during free fishing weekend are eligible for Master Angler recognition.
