The Clinton, Iowa City Council is considering a measure that would ban smoking at youth activities in public parks.

The Clinton Herald reported the Breathe Easy Tobacco Coalition of Clinton and Jackson counties coordinator says results of a survey show more than 80% of Clinton residents support tobacco-free playgrounds, sports complexes, parks and fairgrounds.

The council’s Rules and Regulations committee approved a resolution calling for a ban at youth activities in Clinton.  The measure was forwarded to the full city council for consideration.

The proposal would ban smoking at structured youth activities but not in general, and not at other events such as adult softball league games.

The measure would also require notices and signs to be publicly displayed, advising park users of the ban if it becomes law.
