Rock Island Police Station Relocates After Seven Decades

The Rock Island Police Station is making a move after being in its current location for since 1940.

The Rock Island Police Station is making a move after being in its current location for since 1940.

A meeting was held on Wednesday, June 5 to discuss the new station which will be on 3rd Ave. and 12th Street, just blocks away from its location on 16th Street.

The building was built in 1940 and an addition was built in the 70s. Three years ago, the department had a space analysis done that determined they needed more space to effectively serve the people of Rock Island.

The city and police agreed on the new location after discovering they were unable to remodel the current 22-thousand square-foot station.

Construction on the new building will begin in the spring of 2014. The facility will be about double the size of the 16th Street location and will be more modern.

"We've done as many Band-Aid fixes we can for the current facility, which certainly is not designed to meet police operational needs today," said Rock Island Chief of Police Jeffrey VenHuizen.

The city has not released an estimate for cost and architectural plans, but it was announced Wednesday that the old building will be reused in the future.
