Iowa City is working to ban traffic cameras, drones, and automatic license plate recognition systems.

At the Regular Formal City Council meeting for Iowa City on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 an issue on the agenda was to restrict the use of various traffic enforcement tools.

A move to ban these was passed unanimously on Tuesday.

The motion was introduced by a group called Stop Big Brother. The group states on its website that enforcement technology is not so much about enforcing laws as it is about gaining revenue.

“Worse yet, our liberties, constitutional rights, and this country’s founding principles all end up being the collateral damage,” says the group’s website.

According to the publication Ars Technica, a second and third reading at the city council meeting will be held on June 18.
