The city of Davenport is adding a new park in its city limits.

Crews will begin work on the River Heritage Park Pavilion Wednesday. The park is across the street from the old Howard Johnson Hotel.  It spans from 2nd Street to 4th Street along River Drive.

The city is calling this the Centennial Pavilion Project. The city is dedicating the Pavilion to the Davenport Rotary Club, who is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

City workers say the park will have a scenic view of the Rock Island Arsenal, Lock and Dam 15, and the Mississippi River. The park is also the site of the first railroad bridge that crossed the Mississippi River. That was a bridge that started at the Rock Island Arsenal in the 1850's.

The city is looking to add a gazebo, restrooms, and landscaping to the park. No word on when the park will open. Today's groundbreaking starts at 11 near the old Howard Johnson Hotel.
