Iowans warned of driver’s license scams

As the ability to renew driver’s licenses online nears, Iowans are already seeing scammers trying to get their personal information.

As the ability to renew driver’s licenses online nears, Iowans are already seeing scammers trying to get their personal information.

Governor Terry Branstad signed a new law allowing online renewals for some driver’s licenses May 15, 2013.  Drivers between 18 and 72 years of age can use the online service at every other renewal, keeping the vision testing requirement in place for alternating license renewals.

The new law also allows driver’s license renewals to happen every eight years instead of every five years in Iowa.

Imposter websites are already online, offering information on how to renew your license online for a fee.

The Iowa Department of Transportation offers the same information for free on the motor vehicle division page of the DOT website at http://iowadot.gov.

“What we would like people to know right now is that there are imposter websites out there trying to take advantage of people. There is no way for you to renew your Iowa driver’s license online right now, so beware of those imitator sites,” said Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Division Director Mark Lowe.

Online license renewal is not expected to be available to Iowans until mid- or late-July.
