The cost of water for Iowa American Water customers is rising, and could go even higher.

Customers had a chance to give their input on a proposed rate increase at a public meeting in Davenport, Iowa Monday evening, June 3, 2013.

Starting May 29, 2013, customers will pay an average of 7% more while the state’s utility board reviews a request for an additional rate increase.

That would bring the overall rate hike for Iowa American Water to about 18%.

Iowa American Water sent a letter to customers explaining their request for a rate increase.

The president of Iowa American says the increase is necessary to allow the company to make investments in its infrastructure and to cover rising costs of its operations.

There is another public meeting to discuss the rate hike proposal Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at the Clinton Moose Lodge, 1936 Lincoln Way in Clinton, Iowa.

The Iowa Utilities Board is expected to rule on the increase request in February 2014.
