Branstad signs education reform bill into law

Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill designed to make teaching more attractive in Iowa.

Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill designed to make teaching more attractive in Iowa.

In a ceremony Monday, June 3, 2013 at Des Moines North High School, Branstad signed a new law that increases starting pay for teachers to $33,000.

The bill also provides for bonuses for veteran teachers who take on leadership roles.

Branstad said the new law provides Iowa schools with the support needed to raise student achievement.

Many of the programs provided for in the law will be phased in over the next five years.

At the signing ceremony, Branstad said he plans to conduct a nationwide search to replace outgoing Iowa Department of Education director Jason Glass, who is leaving to become superintendent of a school district in Colorado.
