The Sheriff’s Department says they’re getting reports of a telemarketing scam involving an offer for a free security system.

The calls most frequently come from a phone number with the Missouri area code of 417, but the calls can come from any number – even one that appears to be local.

The scammer offers to install a free security system in the victim’s home, and tries during their conversation to get personal information from the victim.  That personal information is actually used for identity theft.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department says they’ve received numerous reports of this scam happening in their county.

They encourage anyone who gets these calls to immediately hang up and end the call.
