The Illinois legislature passed a bill that would lower the age by which children must be enrolled in school.

Senate Bill 1307 lowers the compulsory school age from seven years old to six years old, and requires all school districts in Illinois to establish kindergarten for instruction of children who are five years old on or before September 1 of each school  year.

The bill passed the Senate on May 30, 2013 with 39 yes votes and 18 votes against.   It passed the House on May 27 with 64 yes votes and 52 votes against.

“We took another step forward today in our mission to ensure that every child in Illinois is prepared to succeed,” said Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.

Quinn said he looked forward to signing the bill into law.  With his signature, the bill takes effect July 1, 2014.
