Peregrine falcon chick name announced

The Peregrine falcon chick that hatched at the MidAmerican Energy building in Davenport has been banded and named.

The Peregrine falcon chick that hatched at the MidAmerican Energy building in Davenport has been banded and named.

She was born the weekend of May 4, 2013 and on Wednesday, May 29 she was introduced to everyone as Sandy. According to MidAmerican Energy, she was named Sandy in memory of the victims of the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

The winner of the naming contest for the falcon thought Sandy was the most appropriate name.

"Sandy was such a horrific event that we thought that would be proper and fitting," said contest winner Diane Karstens. "We've had tornadoes and disasters but all those little kids... it was heart wrenching. We thought that was a perfect name for Sandy."

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources banded the newborn falcon so it can be monitored throughout its life.

She is the 17th chick born to P/D and Scorpio- the falcons who annually lay their eggs in the Quad Cities.
