Shoppers are supporting the local economy in Coal Valley. Tuesday marked the grand opening for a new food hub at the Corn Crib Nursery, 6924 Route 150.
"Grab some asparagus, corn and strawberries for shortcake," said shopper Kim Adlfinger, Rock Island.
The nursery is joining forces with Country Corner Farm Market. It's like creating a fresh food corridor along Route 150.
"Two family-owned operators coming together," said Duane White, Corn Crib's owner. "That's pretty neat in itself."
They'll feature plantings from Country Corner and five other local growers. It's a hands-on growing experience that's taking fresh food to a new level. They're working to strengthen the local economy.
"We need to support our local growers," said shopper Jean Chouinard. Coal Valley.
Support that's helping to literally grow the food hub concept. Davenport's set-up is an investment in nutrition and quality. The Freight House Farmers Market brings it all together.
"I think it's great because you know what's in the food," said shopper Kathryn Kunkel.
The Coal Valley partnership is a twist on traditional farmers markets. It's open seven days a week. It's open Monday through Saturday from 10 until 6, and on Sunday from 10 until 4.
"It's cheap, and I feel like its fresher here," said Adlfinger. "You get that impression that they just picked it."
From blooming flowers to bountiful tomatoes, a match that's designed to sell.
"Plants, produce, they go hand in hand," said Country Corner owner Bruce Curry. "Two family businesses, so it's a win-win situation."
For customers, fresh deals they can almost taste.
"When they put out beautiful produce like that, I certainly will buy it," Chouinard concluded.
