A proposal which would prevent teenagers from tanning is heading to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn for approval.

A proposal which would prevent teenagers from tanning is heading to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn for approval.

The Illinois Senate voted 34-12 on Monday, May 20, approving the bill that prohibits teenagers 18-years and younger from using commercial tanning beds, regardless if their parents grant them permission.

The proposal does not place a ban on spray-on tanning or private-residence tanning.

The American Cancer Society supports the proposal.

“Exposure to ultraviolet radiation, either from sunlight or indoor tanning devices, is the most important, avoidable, known risk factor for skin cancer,” said a spokesperson from the organization.
