Local brewer, Steve Zuidema spent a lot of time over the last 21 years brewing in a basement before moving to the Freight House. Zuidema and his wife opened the first local brewery in the Quad Cities.

The expansion to a second spot down River Drive doesn’t quite compare to his first move into the brew pub business.

“I was a nuclear mechanic, so I worked on stainless steel pumps and tanks,” said Zuidema. “I thought this should be a pretty easy leap. Let’s just start making beer.”

Zuidema said since he’s no longer brewing in the basement he can enjoy the company of his customers.

“I like talking to everyone about brewing and now I have a great place to talk- on the other side of this bar here,” he said.
