Pedestrian dies after being hit by Illinois trooper’s patrol car

A pedestrian died after being struck by an Illinois State Police patrol car in St. Clair County.

State Police said the trooper was taking a person arrested for DUI to the St. Clair County jail when the pedestrian was struck just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

The trooper was reportedly traveling at a speed under the posted speed limit southbound on Illinois 159 when he approached several “illegally parked truck tractor semi-trailers with other pedestrians congregating around the illegally parked vehicles”  north of Emerald Terrace in Belleville, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.

Witnesses said a pedestrian was running in the southbound lanes of traffic near the center line when the pedestrian was hit by the trooper’s patrol car.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
