Iowa man gets prison sentence for stealing trees

A Des Moines man was sentenced to 15 months in prison for stealing black walnut trees from several locations in Iowa.

A Des Moines man was sentenced to 15 months in prison for stealing black walnut trees from several locations in Iowa.

Randall Todd Walker, 49, pleaded guilty to cutting and removing 32 black walnut trees from several government-controlled properties between January and April 2012.

The thefts happened at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Reserve, the downtown Riverside area in Des Moines, the Sycamore area in Polk County and Lake Red Rock area in Marion County.

The stolen trees were valued at about $40,000.

In addition to the prison sentence, Walker was ordered to serve three years of supervised release after his incarceration.  He was also ordered to pay $56,225 in restitution.

Walker was sentenced May 9, 2013.
