A collision between a coal train and an intermodal train halted train traffic on the Union Pacific tracks between Chicago and the Union Pacific destinations in Iowa and Nebraska.
The collision was reported just before 7 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013 on the Union Pacific track about a half-mile east of Grand Junction, Iowa.
The cargo train, carrying containers, was reportedly westbound when an eastbound coal train passed by it and cars began to derail. Cars from the coal train reportedly pushed into and derailed cars from the intermodal train.
At least 20 cars derailed in the crash.
Union Pacific crews hoped to have the tracks reopened by Friday morning, May 10.
