Fire reported at sports complex in Sterling

The sound of an explosion followed by smoke coming from the building were reported at a sports complex in Sterling, Illinois.

Firefighters were sent to Westwood Fitness & Sports Center, 1900 Westwood Drive, just after 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2013.

A witness reported hearing two loud “boom” noises which he thought sounded like explosions.

Heavy smoke was visible from the building exterior when firefighters arrived.  No flames were immediately visible from the building exterior.

High ceilings reportedly allowed the fire to spread quickly inside the building.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
