Illinois State Police say the suspect who shot and killed five people in Manchester, Illinois had planned the attack.

The alleged shooter, 43-year-old Rick Smith broke into a family’s one-story apartment early on April 24, 2013, killing two children, their father and mother- who was pregnant- and the children’s grandmother.

Police say based on witness statements, Smith was in a domestic dispute with the family over his three-year-old daughter. Smith believed the family of his daughter’s mother, Rita Luark, was interfering with the custody battle.

Illinois State Police said they were able to create a timeline of what Smith did before the shootings. Police also said none of the victims were related to Smith.

After leaving the scene of the attack, Smith had a shootout with police and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
