A reward is being offered for information that leads to the recovery of a historic headstone missing from a Scott County cemetery since the 1970s.

Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities posted to Facebook May 3, 2013 asking for help solving the case of a headstone missing and presumed stolen from the Linn Grove Cemetery near Donahue, Iowa.

No photos were available of the actual missing headstone.  The missing headstone dates back to 1863, and bears the inscription “Alexander Wells, Born July 12, 1815 – Died July 11, 1863, Dearest Husband Thou Hast Gone Away.”  The headstone may be for a Civil War veteran who died early in the conflict.

There has been no regular maintenance at the cemetery since the early 1900s.  The headstone was discovered missing in 1974.

Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities is offering a $200 cash reward for information leading to the recovery of the missing headstone.

“Mr. Wells and his family deserve to have this solved and have the headstone returned to its rightful place,” the Facebook post said.

Anyone with information about the missing headstone is asked to call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (309) 762-9500.
