Bettendorf’s United Steelworkers Local 105 will hold a workplace memorial event Friday afternoon.
The event previews Workplace Memorial Day on Sunday, which remembers workers who have lost their lives while working. Community members, faith leaders, and local officials are expected to be on hand Friday.
The Union says that 270 Iowa and Illinois workers died on the job in 2011. 2012’s stats have not come out yet.
The group will call on Congress to require stronger work regulations and protections. The event comes just a day after President Obama spoke at the West, Texas memorial service for the 14 people who lost their lives in a plant explosion April 17.
Congressman Bruce Braley started a resolution to remember the lives lost in the workplace Thursday. Friday’s event starts at 4:30 at the union hall on Devils Glen Road.
