The Henry County Humane Society in Geneseo has begun construction of a new 4,000-foot animal shelter.

Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony held Friday, April 26, 2013 at the property at 14606 Roos Hill Road in Geneseo.   The new shelter will be built on 4.6 acres of land east of the current animal shelter.

In addition to the shelter, a 1,200-square-foot storage garage will be built adjoining the new building.

The facility will have capacity for 80 cats and 10 dogs and include separate sick quarters, intake rooms and get-acquainted rooms plus a meeting room and offices.

The Henry County Humane Society plans to keep the Lion’s Club pavilion and the former city dog park, which are on the facility’s land, open to the public.
