Police said a Maquoketa man told them there was an intruder in his home when he was shot.

The 63-year-old victim was found suffering from a gunshot wound in his home on S. Niagara Street just after 11 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013.

He was taken to an area hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City.

“The victim did indicate that there was an intruder in his house when he was shot then the intruder ran off before officers arrived,” said a statement from Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda.

“There is no Public Safety concern at this time the weapon used has been secured,” the statement said.

The shooting victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
