WIU increases admissions standards for incoming freshmen

Students looking to apply to Western Illinois may have a tougher time next year.

Students looking to apply to Western Illinois may have a tougher time next year.

According to WIU University Relations, the college is increasing admissions standards for incoming freshmen, starting with the Fall 2014 semester.

The Council Admissions and Graduation Standards and the Faculty Senate recently voted in favor of the change.

Admissions Director, Andy Borst said the new standards are based on previous academic achievement and future potential of each student. Those who are close to admission will be evaluated based on a personal statement, recommendations, academic goals, core academic classes, and other circumstances.

The Academic Vice President, Ken Hawkinson said the new admission standards will take away the guess-work and allow students to better plan. Prospective students will have a better idea of items such as what it takes to graduate or what scholarships they are eligible for.

Beginning in September of 2013, WIU will be presenting new admission criteria to high school guidance counselors.
