A pregnant Illinois woman and four of her family members are identified as the people killed by a man who allegedly opened fire in a Manchester, Illinois apartment.
Rick Smith, 43, is accused of forcing his way into the back door of the apartment early Wednesday morning, April 24, 2013 and using a shotgun to kill the five victims.
A six-year-old girl was also wounded in the shooting. She was last reported hospitalized in critical condition.
Smith was pronounced dead at a hospital several hours after a police pursuit that led to his capture. Police previously reported gunfire was exchanged between Smith and police during the pursuit.
The day after the shootings, Illinois State Police said 23-year-old Brittney Luark – who was also pregnant – was killed in the attack.
Luark’s two children, five-year-old Nolan Ralston and one-year-old Brantley Ralston, the children’s father, 29-year-old James Ralston, and Luark’s grandmother, 67-year-old Jo Ann Sinclair, were also killed.
