Illinois Senate approves allowing traffic cameras on school buses

School buses in Illinois may soon have the technology to help catch motorists who drive around buses picking up and dropping off children.

School buses in Illinois may soon have the technology to help catch motorists who drive around buses picking up and dropping off children.

The state Senate approved a bill Wednesday, April 24, 2013 allowing traffic cameras on school buses.   The vote was 36-12 in favor of the bill.

The law would permit school districts to partner with city and county law enforcement to record images of vehicles and their license plate numbers if they go around a bus with its stop sign or stop arm deployed.

If it passes the house and is signed into law, the proposal calls for a $150 fine for a first offense and $500 fine for subsequent violations.

Opponents say they think the cameras are unconstitutional because people who get the tickets cannot challenge them in court.
