A man faces charges of allegedly sexually abusing and stabbing a woman who was found in the stairwell of an apartment building.

KCRG reports that on suspicion of first-degree kidnapping, sexual abuse, and attempted murder, 21-year-old Bryan Roche was arrested on Tuesday, April 24, 2013.

Police were called to a southeast Cedar Rapids apartment complex Sunday evening after someone had found a 20-year-old woman who had been sexually assaulted and stabbed. She was taken to a local hospital and treated for her injuries.

According to police, Roche had kept the victim at the building for about two hours on Sunday. Authorities say during that time he assaulted and stabbed her, causing life threatening injuries.

Officials say the two met through a social media website. It is unclear if Sunday was the first time they had met, according to the report.

Authorities want to remind the public to keep safety in mind when meeting-up with someone you met online. They advise that you do not reveal personal information, such as your address or workplace. Also, it is suggested that people meet in public places. Let a friend know of a time-frame that you will call after the meeting, and pre-arrange an emergency phrase that signifies you are uncomfortable or need help.

The incident remains under investigation.
