Police concerned over Illinois highway speed increase

The Illinois Senate passed a bill that would raise the speed limit to 70 mph on interstates and tollways.

Illinois State Police and the Transportation Department have raised concerns over increasing speeds.

The bill passed through committee and is now up for debate in the House.

The proposal would raise the speed limit to 70 mph on four-lane interstates and tollways.

Chicago and surrounding counties would have the option to opt out of the higher limits.

If the House approves the bill - SB2356, speed limits will increase on January 1, 2014.
