Iowa to deploy bait cars to help catch car thieves

Iowa State Police plan to launch several bait cars to help deter car theft across the state.

Iowa State Police plan to launch several bait cars to help deter car theft across the state.

“Our top priority is ensuring safety and protecting the quality of life we enjoy here in Iowa. So, we’ve been taking a close look at statistics and plan to place these bait cars in areas known for vehicle theft.  The unsuspecting thief will be in for a surprise once he or she gets in behind the wheel,” said Iowa State Patrol Captain Dave Garrison.

About $40 of the average comprehensive coverage premium goes to help costs connected to auto theft according to Bob O’Hollearn, Regional Vice-president of Allied Insurance.

The bait cars have in-car video surveillance and GPS tracking capabilities designed to catch car thieves in the act.  The bait cars will be used in various locations across the state where auto theft rates are highest.

Nationwide Insurance Company donated several vehicles and the surveillance equipment for the cars to the Iowa State Patrol.
