Increased rain chances in our area have also increased the likelihood of flooding along some local waterways.
City crews in Davenport and Rock Island, as well as managers of Sunset Marina, were taking extra steps to prepare for possible flooding along the Mississippi and Rock rivers.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch through late Thursday night for several counties in our area including Knox, Peoria, Stark, Tazewell, Fulton and Schuyler counties in Illinois.
Flood warnings remained in effect until further notice for several locations along the Mississippi, Rock and Wapsipinicon rivers:
Mississippi River at Illinois City, Lock & Dam 16 was at 13.5 feet late Tuesday morning. Flood stage there is 15 feet, and the river was expected to be above flood stage Friday evening, April 19 and reach 15.3 feet by Sunday morning. At 13 feet, water affects residents on Smith’s Island.
Mississippi River at Muscatine was at 15.1 feet at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Flood stage there is 16 feet. Minor flooding was forecast, as the river was expected to rise above flood stage Thursday and rise to 17 feet by Monday morning, April 22. At 16 feet, water affects the lower portion of the parking lot at Riverside Park.
Mississippi River at Rock Island, Lock & Dam 15 was at 14.2 feet Tuesday morning. Flood stage there is 15 feet. The river was expected to rise above flood stage by Thursday evening and continue rising to 15.7 feet by Sunday. At 16 feet, water affects LeClaire Park.
The Mississippi River at New Boston, Lock & Dam 17 was at 14.9 feet Tuesday morning. Flood stage there is 15 feet. The river was forecast to rise above flood stage Tuesday evening and continue to rise to 16.4 feet by Sunday morning.
The Mississippi River at Gladstone, Lock & Dam 18 water was at 10.3 feet at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Flood stage there is 10 feet. The river was forecast to rise to 11.6 feet by Monday morning, April 22 and then begin to fall.
Mississippi River at Burlington was at 15.3 feet at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Flood stage there is 15 feet. Minor flooding was occurring and was expected to continue. The river level was expected to rise to 16.4 feet by Sunday. At 16 feet, low-lying homes and buildings in Montrose and Niota are affected.
Mississippi River at Keithsburg was at 14.1 feet Tuesday morning. Flood stage there is 14 feet, and at that level water affects low-lying areas in Oquawka. The river was expected to rise to 15.3 feet Sunday morning.
Rock River at Joslin was at 13.4 feet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Flood stage there is 12 feet. At 13 feet, unprotected agricultural land floods and water affects Lundeen’s Landing campground. The river was expected to fall to 13.3 feet Wednesday morning.
Wapsipinicon River near DeWitt was at 10.8 feet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Flood stage there is 11 feet. The river was expected to rise above flood stage Thursday and continue to rise to 11.5 feet by Saturday night. The level must reach 12 feet before water affects homes along old U.S. Highway 61.
